There are some foods that are edible for humans that can pose hazards to our canine friends. Some foods can cause mild digestive upsets while others can result to severe illness and even death. Below are 15 things that you should never give to your dog.

1. Avocado

While avocado is good for humans, it should not be given to dogs. The fruit contains persin, which is toxic to dogs when a large amount of it is consumed. Persin is not just found in the fruit. It is also found in the seed, bark, and leaves. You should keep your dog away from the avocado tree if you have one at home.

2. Chocolate

Chocolate is one of the most common foods that your dog should never eat. It contains theobromine and caffeine that are toxic to dogs.

3. Alcoholic Beverages

Drinks with alcohol content can cause seizures, arrhythmias, low blood sugar, intoxication, coma and even death.

4. Xylitol (sweetener)

Xylitol used in a lot of products, mainly in gums, candies. If dog eats gums or candies containing xylitol it could be fatal. This ingredient is a part of many gums and candy products it could cause damage to the liver and could be fatal. You should check product labels to make sure that it doesn’t contain xylitol before giving it to your dog. Also any products containing xylitol should be stored away where your dog can’t get it.

5. Apple Seeds

Apple seeds are toxic to dogs because they have a natural chemical that releases cyanide when digested. This is only a health issue if large amounts of apple seeds were chewed up by the dog.

6. Citrus

The fruit, seeds, peels, leaves and stems of citrus plants have different amounts of citric acid that can cause irritation and central nervous system depression when consumed in large amounts. Small doses can result in minor stomach upset.

7. Grapes and Raisins

While grapes provide essential nutrients to us humans, it is toxic to our canine friends. Consumption of grapes can lead to kidney failure.

8. Onions

Onions contain Thiosulphate that destroys the dogs’ red blood cells. Indicators of onion poisoning include vomiting, lethargy, difficulty in breathing, and diarrhea.

9. Bacon

Dogs love the smell of bacon, but you should avoid feeding it to them. Bacon has high amounts of salt and fat that can lead to pancreatic inflammation.

10. Coconut and Coconut Oil

A large amount of coconut milk, flesh, water, or oil can give a dog an upset stomach and diarrhea.

11. Milk and other Dairy Products

Milk and other milk-based products can give a dog diarrhea and other digestive problems. It can also result in food allergies.

12. Macadamia Nuts

Macadamia nuts contain chemicals that can cause toxic reaction to dogs. When ingested, it can make the dog vomit, had a staggering gait, tremors, hypothermia, and depression.

13. Cat Food

Cat foods are not recommended for dogs because it contains high levels of fats and protein.

14. Cooked Bones

While dogs love bones, it is best to give them raw bones. Cooked bones can easily splinter when chewed by dogs.

15. Salt and Salty Food Products

Salt, when consumed in large amounts, can lead to excessive urination and thirst. It can even lead to sodium ion poisoning that can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, tremors, seizures, high body temperature, depression, and even death.

16. Yeast

Yeast is dangerous to dogs because the canine stomach is warm and moist. It can make the yeast expand and lead to bowel obstruction, disruption of breathing, or cut off blood flow.
