  1. An extinct dog breed, the Turnspit dog or the Vernepator Cur, used to be a part of every kitchen. They were used to turn a wheel that turns meat to cook it evenly.
  2. Dogs are capable of sensing if a storm is coming. They can hear the storm miles away even before human ears can hear them.
  3. A few of Moscow’s stray dogs learned a lot of tricks to survive. They know how to navigate the subways, observe traffic lights, and send a smaller and cuter dog that is part of their pack to ask for food as humans tend to give food to cute dogs.
  4. Bummer and Lazarus were the only dogs exempted from San Francisco’s Anti-Stray Dog Law. They were believed capable of killing and eating 400 rats in a month.
  5. Dogs use their whiskers to help them navigate their way in the dark. They can use their whiskers to “see” in the dark. The receptors found in their whiskers can tell the speed, height, and shape of objects near them.
  6. Dog’s own version of a human handshake is bum smelling other dogs. They have anal sacs that release chemicals with information that other dogs can translate, like gender, health and emotionally status of the dog they are smelling.
  7. All pups are blind and deaf when born. Their eyes are ears are still developing at this stage, even they have already been born. Once fully developed and ready, they’ll be able to open their eyes and hear.
  8. Guide dogs are very much trained to eliminate on their owner’s command. They are very well trained they can go anytime their owners tell them to.
  9. Dogs know if you have cancer or Diabetes, thanks to their strong sense of smell. Service dogs can be trained specifically to detect cancer and dangerous blood levels.
  10. Dogs have the intelligence similar to two-year-olds. Dogs are capable of learning 165 words like a 2-year-old child.
  11. Belgian Malinois are used by Navy Seals to complete some of their training. They train with their humans at least 15 hours a week, and only 1% can make the cut.
  12. Dogs poop in line where the magnetic field – in the north-south axis. A scientist has no explanation yet, but dogs do poop this way.

I only knew about four on the list and was surprised about how much we still don’t know about dogs. It’s nice to learn new knowledge, especially about dogs.
