Sharon sadly passed the next day. She died in the afternoon just a few days after contracting the bacteria. It was a curious case since another incident wherein the dog-lick bacteria-caused illness to a man earlier that month.

Greg Manteufel also acquired Capnocytophaga Canimorsus a few days after some dog licked him. He was living just two miles away from where Sharon Larson lived. The good news is Greg is still alive. However, part of his arms and legs needed to be amputated because of the rare infection.

But what is Capnocytophaga Canimorsus and how do people get it?

According to CDC, the bacteria Capnocytophaga is commonly found in the mouths of dogs, cats, and even humans. Because it is too common, it is considered as a normal flora. They say that 57% of cats and 74% of dogs have this bacteria commonly living in their mouths.

The Capnocytophaga Canimorsus is one of the species of Capnocytophaga. It can cause a serious infection when passed on to humans. We usually get this bacteria from cats or dog when bitten or a pet licks an area of our skin that is a mucous membrane or has a cut or wound.

Can we check the presence of bacteria on my cat/dog?

Yes, through some test. However, this may not be the best way to indicate if your dog or cat has the bacteria as some days they can have it, some days they don’t. Also, since it is a normal flora among cats and dogs, it won’t be as effective and as practical.

Are there people more at risk of this dog-lick bacteria?

There are people who will be more likely at risk of getting the infection. Some of which are immunocompromised people and those who have already lost their spleen.
